A 300-level Computer Science student at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), identified as Kelvin, reportedly took his own life following severe financial difficulties linked to online betting and accommodation-related obligations.
Kelvin, who had been living in an off-campus lodge, was entrusted by the landlord to act as caretaker, a role that involved collecting rent from other students. According to a former roommate who wished to remain anonymous, Kelvin had previously asked for help with lodging payments due to the high cost of accommodation.
Sources indicated that Kelvin lost a substantial sum of money to online betting, while also being under pressure to remit rent collected from lodge occupants and settle other accumulated debts. Before his death, he reportedly transferred N100,000 to the landlord, promising to send the balance once his virtual bank network was restored. At the time, he was said to have about N570,000 in total.
The former roommate described the news as shocking and difficult to believe, noting that Kelvin had been a friendly and approachable student during his first year. Other students confirmed that Kelvin’s financial struggles were compounded by his role as a housing agent for fellow students.
As of press time, IBBUL management had not issued an official statement, and attempts to reach the University Chief Security Officer and Niger State Police were unsuccessful.
