The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have formalized a partnership to enhance national security and accountability in Nigeria’s growing space sector. The collaboration was cemented through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.
Dr. Matthew Adepoju, Director-General of NASRDA, highlighted the significance of deploying geospatial intelligence for crime prevention. He noted that the partnership would strengthen the enforcement of space regulations, improve spectrum management, and ensure compliance for both local and international organizations operating in Nigeria’s space ecosystem.
Illegal mining and other activities contributing to national insecurity were cited as areas where NASRDA’s advanced space technologies could support EFCC investigations. By leveraging these tools, the agencies aim to enhance regulatory oversight, asset tracking, and investigative efficiency, aligning with international best practices.
EFCC Chairman Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede described the MoU as a model of inter-agency cooperation that strengthens institutional capacity and improves mandate delivery. He explained that NASRDA’s technologies will complement EFCC’s expertise in fraud-risk intelligence, creating a more transparent, compliant, and secure space sector.
The collaboration marks a new chapter for both institutions, promising improved national security, stronger enforcement, and a framework for other agencies to emulate in advancing governance and accountability in Nigeria.
