President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Emir of Ilorin, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Sheikh Muhammad Saliu, the Chief Imam of Ilorin.
Sheikh Saliu, 75, was the 12th and longest-serving Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate, having held the position since 1983. Known for his scholarship, humility, and dedication to unity, the cleric was widely respected across religious and community lines.
In a statement conveyed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu described Sheikh Saliu as “a devoted servant of Allah, a bridge-builder, and a voice of moderation,” noting his enduring contributions to religious harmony, community development, and mentorship of future generations.
Governor AbdulRazaq praised Sheikh Saliu as representing “the finest breed of Muslim scholarship in Ilorin,” highlighting his patience, good nature, and leadership. Emir Sulu-Gambari called his death “a colossal loss to the Emirate, the Muslim Ummah, and humanity,” emphasizing the late cleric’s role in promoting interfaith harmony.
Former Senate President Saraki described Sheikh Saliu as an institution whose four decades of leadership on the mimbar made him a moral compass and spiritual authority, whose influence extended far beyond Ilorin.
The janazah (funeral rites) was held at the Palace Square of the Emir of Ilorin at 4 p.m. yesterday.
