A massive multi-vehicle crash involving more than 100 cars and trucks has left motorists stranded and highways shut down in the US state of Michigan, as a powerful winter storm continues to unleash hazardous conditions across large parts of the country.
The pile-up occurred on Interstate 196 (I-196) in western Michigan, just southwest of Grand Rapids, after heavy snowfall and strong winds reduced visibility and turned roads into sheets of ice. Authorities described driving conditions as “treacherous,” prompting the closure of both directions of the interstate for several hours on Monday.
Dozens of Trucks and Cars Involved in I-196 Crash
According to Michigan State Police, the crash involved more than 100 vehicles, including over 30 large trailer trucks, many of which jackknifed or slid off the roadway during the storm.
Emergency responders worked through the night to assess injuries, assist stranded motorists, and clear the wreckage. Police confirmed that numerous injuries were reported, but said none were believed to be fatal.
Images and videos shared on social media and by local news outlets showed a chaotic scene of crumpled vehicles piled on top of one another, stretching across a snow-covered section of highway. Some cars were pushed into ditches or spun sideways as chain-reaction collisions unfolded.
Motorists Describe Terrifying Conditions
Drivers caught in the pile-up described near-whiteout conditions as snow blew forcefully across the road.
Pedro Mata Jr, one of the motorists involved, told The Associated Press that visibility dropped so sharply he could barely see the vehicles ahead of him, despite driving slowly at around 32 to 40 kilometres per hour (20–25 mph).
“I was able to stop safely, but I decided to pull into the median so I wouldn’t get hit from behind,” Mata said.
“It was a little scary just listening to everything – the bangs and booms behind you. I could see what was in front of me, but I couldn’t see what was behind me.”
Winter Storm Impacts Widen Across the US
The Michigan crash is part of a broader winter storm system sweeping across the United States, bringing heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and dangerous wind chills.
The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple warnings for:
- Extremely cold temperatures
- Blizzard-like conditions
- Freezing rain and snow accumulation
Affected areas stretch from northern Minnesota southward and eastward through Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Forecasters warned that temperatures in parts of the Midwest could plunge to -22 degrees Celsius (-8 degrees Fahrenheit) when wind chill is factored in, creating life-threatening conditions for anyone stranded outdoors or traveling without proper preparation.
Cold Weather Threat Extends to Southern States
Unusually cold air is also expected to push farther south than normal. Meteorologists warned that freezing overnight temperatures could reach parts of north-central Florida and southeast Georgia, posing risks to infrastructure, agriculture, and vulnerable populations unaccustomed to winter conditions.
Authorities Urge Caution as Storm Continues
State and local officials across affected regions urged motorists to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel
- Reduce speed significantly
- Allow extra stopping distance
- Carry emergency supplies, including blankets, food, and charged mobile phones
Michigan State Police said crews would continue working to reopen I-196 once all damaged vehicles were removed and road conditions improved.
“This storm is not over yet,” officials warned, urging drivers to check weather updates and road conditions before heading out.
A Stark Reminder of Winter Driving Dangers
The massive Michigan pile-up highlights the serious dangers of winter driving, particularly during fast-moving storms that can rapidly change road conditions.
As forecasters warn of more snow and bitter cold in the days ahead, authorities across the US are stressing the importance of preparation, patience, and caution to prevent further accidents and loss of life.
