Federal Polytechnic Ukana Rector Urges Students to Report Sexual Harassment

Mrs. Eduma Essien, Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Ukana in Akwa Ibom State, has urged students to report any form of sexual pressure or harassment from lecturers to the school management or the Polytechnic’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Unit for prompt investigation and disciplinary action.

Speaking at the institution’s 12th Orientation Exercise for newly admitted students on Tuesday, Essien also warned against examination malpractice, cultism, and other antisocial behaviors, emphasizing that the polytechnic maintains zero tolerance for such vices. She stressed that students should familiarize themselves with the school’s rules, policies, and regulations.

The rector further clarified that only approved textbooks should be purchased, and the sale of handouts within the polytechnic is strictly prohibited. She reassured students that her administration would provide a safe and disciplined learning environment that promotes academic excellence.

Essien said, “I encourage you to report any form of sexual pressure from lecturers. This institution does not condone the exchange of gifts for marks, and we maintain zero tolerance for cultism and examination malpractice. We aim to produce graduates who can confidently defend their certificates anywhere.”

Highlighting the importance of practical skills, she noted that students would graduate not only with academic credentials but also with competencies gained through the polytechnic’s mandatory skills acquisition programs. Essien also encouraged students to cooperate with lecturers and diligently complete assignments to ensure effective teaching and learning.

The orientation featured lectures from key resource persons, including the Registrar, Mr. Idhigu Lucky; the Bursar, Sir Emmanuel Esomonu; and the Polytechnic Librarian, Mr. Ehikioya Uduebor.
