Wike Builds New Police Stations in Abuja Communities to Tackle Insecurity

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has initiated the construction of new police divisions in rural and border areas of Abuja to enhance community safety and improve access to security services.

The move comes in response to rising insecurity across parts of the FCT between late 2023 and early 2024, particularly in Abaji, Kwali, and Bwari, where kidnappings and bandit attacks were frequent. Wike said the expansion is part of his commitment to “decentralise policing and bring safety nearer to residents.”

The FCT Minister has ordered the construction of two additional divisional police stations across each of the six area councils to enable faster response to crime.

Construction is underway at Tukashare and Saburi (AMAC), Bako (Kwali), Yaba (Abaji), Giri (Gwagwalada), and Ushafa (Bwari). At Saburi, the main police station and officers’ quarters are nearly completed, including:

  • An administrative building with offices for the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), secretary, other officers, and two holding cells with toilets and bathrooms.
  • A residential block with six two-bedroom flats, each containing a kitchen, dining area, and three toilets.

Project engineer Ahmed Yahaya confirmed that finishing works and industrial cleaning are underway, with painting scheduled to begin in two days.

At Yaba Divisional Police Station, site engineer Ayinde Adewale highlighted the strategic importance of the location near the Niger State border, emphasizing its role in preventing criminal movement. Adewale also credited the FCT Administration’s adequate funding for keeping the project on track for completion before November.

Residents in the communities expressed relief and optimism. Farmer Musa Yakubu said the police presence would help boost economic activity, while trader Ibrahim Danladi noted that people now feel safer to move freely.

Officials confirmed that the new police divisions follow a national prototype design approved by the Inspector-General of Police, ensuring uniformity, comfort, and functionality to improve policing and officers’ working conditions.
