Federal lawmakers from the Southeast in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have threatened to boycott the party’s upcoming National Convention in Ibadan over a dispute concerning the position of National Woman Leader.
The lawmakers, led by Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere (Ideato North/South, Imo), allege a plan to rezone the position from the Southeast to the South-South. They have accused Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, of masterminding this move, which they describe as an attempt to “humiliate and alienate the Southeast” within the party.
Ugochinyere argued that the position was originally zoned to the Southeast, specifically to Imo State, after an earlier arrangement with former Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State became void following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers have issued a two-week ultimatum for the party to reverse the alleged plan, warning that failure to do so would lead to a boycott of the convention and potentially trigger mass defections from the region.
“If this injustice is allowed to stand, no elected Lawmaker from the Southeast will remain in the PDP,” Ugochinyere stated, cautioning that the move could worsen the party’s internal crisis.
