MultiChoice Takes Anti-Piracy Campaign to Lagos Schools

MultiChoice Nigeria has taken its fight against piracy to the classroom, hosting an Anti-Piracy Sensitisation Programme at Kuramo Senior College, Victoria Island, Lagos, as part of efforts to build a new generation that values originality and respects intellectual property.

The outreach targeted secondary school students, helping them understand the dangers of piracy and the importance of protecting creative work from an early age.

The interactive session featured legal experts and creative industry figures who used storytelling, games, and open conversations to explain how piracy deprives filmmakers, musicians, and other creatives of their due rewards and discourages investment in the creative economy.

A key highlight was an engaging class by Mr. Obafemi Agaba, a lawyer specialising in intellectual property and entertainment law, who explained complex copyright issues in simple terms.

“Every film you stream illegally, every song or book you share without permission, takes something away from the people who made it,” he told the students. “If you love Nollywood and Afrobeats, then you must help protect them.”

Caroline Oghuma, Executive Head of Corporate Affairs at MultiChoice Nigeria, said the school sensitisation forms part of a broader campaign to “raise a generation that values creativity and rejects content theft.”

“The fight against piracy can’t stop with creators—it has to begin in classrooms. The future of Nollywood and Nigerian music is sitting right in front of us,” she said.

Representatives from the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) also attended. Speaking for the Commission, Mr. Charles Amudipe, Deputy Director of Operations, commended MultiChoice’s grassroots efforts, describing awareness as “one of the strongest weapons against piracy.”

Vice Principal of Kuramo Senior College, Mr. Oyewale Taofik, said the programme opened students’ eyes to everyday acts of piracy, noting that “they now understand that forwarding movie links or buying pirated CDs is a form of theft.”

The initiative is part of MultiChoice’s nationwide anti-piracy campaign, which continues with the Walk Against Piracy scheduled for November 27 in Lagos, ahead of National Anti-Piracy Day on November 30.

Through such sustained efforts, MultiChoice Nigeria says it remains committed to building a fair, original, and globally respected creative industry.
