Traffic along the Chisco axis heading into Victoria Island was severely disrupted on Monday following an accident involving an upturned gas tanker. Emergency operations were launched, and vehicles were temporarily diverted to manage the situation.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in collaboration with other emergency responders, began recovery efforts to safely remove the tanker from the road. The incident occurred near the traffic light at the Chisco axis, causing significant delays for motorists.
In an official statement, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, said the operation required temporary closure of the main carriageway to ensure a “safe, swift, and professional recovery” of the tanker.
“Motorists are strongly advised to exercise patience and cooperate with LASTMA officials and other emergency responders on the ground,” he added.
Efforts are ongoing to complete the evacuation as quickly as possible and restore normal traffic flow. Taofiq assured the public that road user safety remains the top priority of the Lagos State Government and that updates would be provided once the operation is completed.
Frustrated motorists expressed their displeasure at the traffic congestion. Jane Kenneth, a motorist, told The Nation she had been stuck in traffic since 8 a.m., while some commuters opted to trek to their destinations due to the gridlock.
As of press time, traffic along the Chisco axis remained at a standstill.
