Brig.-Gen. Uba Assumes Duty as New Military Spokesman, Vows to Counter False Narratives

Brigadier-General Samailla Mohammed Uba has officially assumed office as the new Director of Defence Information (DDI), promising to prioritize unified, timely, and transparent communication that highlights the achievements of all branches of the Nigerian Armed Forces while countering misinformation and speculative reporting.

Speaking at the Defence Headquarters after taking over from Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Uba emphasized that the DDI’s role as a bridge between the military, media, and public is foundational to national cohesion and troop morale.

“Under my watch, the Directorate of Defence Information will operate under four strategic priorities: Unity of Purpose, Timeliness and Transparency, Digital Innovation, and Effective Media Relations,” he said.

Uba outlined plans for closer coordination among the public relations units of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, noting that synchronized messaging and joint briefings will ensure the military speaks with one voice. He also highlighted cooperation with other security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, represented by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.

“In crisis or peacetime, the public deserves accurate and timely information. We will reinforce proactive communication strategies to counter information disorders and preempt speculative reporting,” Uba added, noting the establishment of a rapid-response team to monitor and address emerging threats.

Recognizing the growing importance of digital platforms, the new DDI pledged to leverage data analytics, social media engagement, and multimedia storytelling to connect with both domestic and international audiences.

“The battlefield of perception is increasingly online. Our digital footprint must mirror the agility and precision of our armed forces,” he said.

Uba also called on media professionals to collaborate as allies in promoting truth, proposing a quarterly forum to align efforts in national interest and celebrate the valor and sacrifices of military personnel.

He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to integrity, innovation, and strengthening the country’s defence information architecture through public education, fact-checking, and strategic media partnerships.

“I want to assure the Chief of Defence Staff that I pledge to uphold the highest standards of integrity and innovation in this role,” Brig.-Gen. Uba said.
