CITAD Condemns Arrest of Kano Youths Over Facebook Post

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has condemned the arrest of Murtala Garba Doka and Shamsu Safiyanu Lambu in Tofa LGA, Kano State, over a Facebook post criticizing the local council chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Yakubu Addis.

CITAD described the arrest as a violation of digital rights and freedom of expression, which are guaranteed under Section 39 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution. The youths were reportedly detained after criticizing the chairman for allegedly abandoning the Lambu–Banki–Yarimawa–Jakata road project, valued at ₦240 million.

The organization warned that such arrests represent a dangerous trend aimed at silencing citizens and called for their immediate, unconditional release. CITAD also urged the police not to be used for political intimidation and encouraged citizens to continue expressing opinions responsibly, promoting transparency and accountability.
