PDP North-Central Stakeholders Reject Alleged Suspension of Damagun

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the North-Central Zone has distanced itself from the reported suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Malam Umar Damagun, by the faction led by Sen. Anyanwu. The group also rejected the appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as the new acting National Chairman.

Speaking after a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Francis Orogu, the PDP North-Central Secretary, described the crisis as an avoidable political dispute. He urged party members to exercise wisdom and implement pending National Executive Committee (NEC) decisions aimed at strengthening the party ahead of its forthcoming National Convention.

Orogu warned Mohammed, who was reportedly appointed by a “four-member National Working Committee,” to avoid actions that could deepen divisions within the party.

Meanwhile, the PDP National Ex-Officio Forum condemned what it described as an unlawful takeover of the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja by Anyanwu and his supporters. The forum, led by Chairman Clement Faboyede and Secretary Mrs. Hassan Comfort, called the move a violation of the party’s constitution and a threat to internal democracy.

The forum reaffirmed full support for Damagun, describing him as a symbol of stability, inclusiveness, and credible leadership. “Under his leadership, the PDP continues to pursue peace, reconciliation, and reform,” the forum said.

In contrast, the Forum of Youth Leaders across Nigeria expressed support for Mohammed, describing him as a youth-friendly leader capable of uniting different factions. The group urged all stakeholders to back Mohammed in his efforts to stabilize the party.

Comrade Brian Odion, Secretary of the youth forum, dismissed the notion of factionalism within the PDP, emphasizing that the party remains united in pursuing the right course.

The developments highlight ongoing tensions within the PDP, with divisions between supporters of Damagun and Mohammed raising questions about the party’s internal cohesion ahead of its National Convention.
