AAC Urges Nigerians to Back Coalition Against Police “Tiger Base” Impunity, Demands Shutdown of Owerri Facility

The African Action Congress (AAC) has called on Nigerians to support the Coalition Against Police Tiger Base Impunity (CAPTI), demanding urgent reforms and the closure of the notorious Tiger Base police facility in Owerri, Imo State, following the release of a damning investigative report.

In a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rex Elanu, the AAC urged citizens, civil society organizations, and the Nigerian diaspora to intensify pressure on authorities to act swiftly. The call comes after CAPTI unveiled its report, The Tiger Base Files: Systematic Torture, Extrajudicial Killings, and the Collapse of Police Accountability in Imo State, on December 15, 2025.

The report, produced by CAPTI—a coalition including Take It Back Movement, Amnesty International, and Avocats Sans Frontières—alleges systematic torture, unlawful detention, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings at the facility over the past three years, portraying it as a symbol of unchecked police brutality and impunity.

“The findings contained in The Tiger Base Files are a grave indictment of the Nigerian state and its security architecture,” the AAC said.

The party highlighted additional allegations, including claims of cannibalism, organ harvesting, and sex trafficking, citing information from victims and investigators. AAC National Chairman Omoyele Sowore, a prominent CAPTI member, described these as potential crimes against humanity, reflecting a breakdown of accountability in Nigeria’s law enforcement.

The AAC outlined CAPTI’s demands, urging Nigerians from all sectors—workers, students, faith-based organizations, professional bodies, and civil society groups—to support the coalition’s call for justice. These demands include:

  • Immediate shutdown of Tiger Base and all illegal detention and torture centers nationwide.
  • Prosecution of all officers and commanders involved, particularly ACP Oladimeji Adeyeyiwa, who commanded Tiger Base when at least 200 people reportedly died.
  • Independent, transparent investigations into all allegations, including autopsies for recent deaths.
  • Justice, reparations, and rehabilitation for victims and affected families.
  • Genuine, people-centered police reform with strong civilian oversight.

“This is a defining moment. The fight against Tiger Base impunity is a fight for life, dignity, and the future of Nigeria,” the AAC said, warning citizens not to “look away while state institutions are weaponized against the people.”

Elanu reaffirmed the party’s commitment to justice and accountability, declaring AAC’s solidarity with CAPTI until Tiger Base is shut down, perpetrators are held accountable, and justice is served.
