Accord Party Denies Suspension of National Chairman Mgbudem

The Accord Party has dismissed claims that its National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem, was suspended, calling the reports “laughable” and the work of political opportunists seeking relevance.

In a statement, Joseph Omorogbe, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, said the announcement at a stakeholders’ meeting in Keffi, Nasarawa State, was orchestrated by former presidential candidate Chris Imumolen, who had long been expelled from the party. Omorogbe described the vote of no confidence as “a joke taken too far,” accusing Imumolen of seeking “cheap publicity to mislead unsuspecting members of the public.”

Omorogbe reaffirmed that Mgbudem remains the legitimate national chairman, officially recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and listed on its website. He emphasized that Accord members are united and will not be distracted by expelled members or external actors attempting to destabilize the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The statement comes a day after a faction of state chairmen from across Nigeria claimed to have suspended Mgbudem over alleged anti-party activities and named Imumolen as national chairman. Accord dismissed the claims, citing a Federal High Court judgment and accusing the duo of colluding with outside political actors during the Anambra governorship election—a charge the party calls fabricated.

Accord also referenced a July 17, 2025, ruling by Justice Fatima A. Aliyu, which struck out a suit filed by Imumolen and others, affirming Mgbudem’s leadership. The party insisted that the Keffi gathering has no constitutional authority within Accord and urged Nigerians to disregard it.

Omorogbe concluded that under Mgbudem, Accord has been reorganized and repositioned as a progressive mass movement, and that the mainstream leadership remains united, with party structures intact despite attempts to foment internal conflict.
