Adam Scott, known for his role in Severance, is taking fans on a heartfelt journey through family, memories, and milestones in his upcoming docuseries The Family Car: An American Love Story. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Scott opens up about his first big Hollywood paycheck, his purchase of a Volvo S60, and how that purchase coincided with an unexpected career setback.
The four-episode docuseries, produced in collaboration with Volvo Cars, streams on Nov. 7 across Fire TV, Amazon.com, and YouTube. Directed by Emmy-winner Chris Wilcha (Flipside) and shot by Igor Martinović (House of Cards), the series follows Scott and three other artists as they share deeply personal family stories while traveling across the United States. A feature film version of the docuseries will later stream on Prime Video on Dec. 12, weaving together all four episodes into a cohesive narrative.
Adam Scott’s First Big Acting Paycheck and His Volvo S60
At 52, Scott reflects on his first major Hollywood paycheck from the 2002 ABC series The Court, starring Sally Field. “The first new car I ever got was a Volvo,” Scott recalls. “I grew up living vicariously through movies — a lot of people do — and always saw the Volvo as this sign of intellectual sophistication and a certain kind of brainy success as a kid.”
Scott chose the Volvo S60, leasing it with what he describes as “the biggest check I’d written. I really kind of sweated my way through it.” In a twist of irony, Scott was fired from the show shortly after buying the car. “But I was happy to be left with this car,” he says. “The car kind of made me feel great. We were fired so last minute that they had to pay us for the whole season, so I was able to float my fancy new car for a while.”
His episode of the docuseries, streaming Dec. 5, delves into this story, reflecting on the blend of excitement and uncertainty that comes with early career milestones.
Family, Cars, and Life Lessons
Volvo has played a significant role in Scott’s life beyond his first car. The actor shares how his Volvo vehicles were part of major family moments, including driving his children Graham, 19, and Frankie, 16, home from the hospital. He even notes that his Severance character, Mark Scout, drives a ’90s Volvo — a coincidence he finds amusing.
In the docuseries, Scott’s daughter Frankie joins him, offering a window into their father-daughter relationship. “She’s a really good parallel parker, which is bizarre. That took me years to perfect,” he jokes. The series captures both the joy and nerves of parenthood, particularly as Frankie prepares to get her driver’s license in January.
Scott also emphasizes the importance of road safety, expressing concern over drivers distracted by their phones. “The one thing I, and I’m sure most parents, worry about right now is phones. Just this morning, I was driving her to school, and someone in front of us was clearly on their phone, swerving into oncoming traffic. People cannot put their phones down,” he warns.
The Emotional Impact of the Docuseries
Reflecting on the project, Scott says the most rewarding part was the opportunity to spend quality time with Frankie during filming. “Now, we have this memento of us together, and I just love it. It’s really moving for me to watch,” he shares.
Scott’s story is just one of four featured in the series, with other episodes highlighting:
- Gus Powell (Photographer) – Nov. 7
- Jah Landis (Music Producer) – Nov. 14
- Erin French (Chef & Author) – Nov. 21
Janique Helson, Head of Brand Marketing at Volvo Car USA, notes, “These are real stories from real Volvo owners about the experiences that matter most. We’re proud to share them through our partnership with Amazon Ads.”
The Family Car: An American Love Story is available to stream beginning Nov. 7, offering fans an intimate glimpse into the lives, milestones, and family bonds of Adam Scott and other notable artists.
