Adamawa Decongestion Committee Upholds Two-Year Jail Term for Beer Theft

The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee, a judicial body set up to reduce overcrowding in the state’s correctional centres, has upheld a two-year prison sentence for a man convicted of stealing beer.

Ibrahim Usman, 30, was originally sentenced by the Upper Area Court in Hong for stealing 20 crates of beer in Wuro Bokki, Hong LGA. He had been serving his term at Hong Correctional Centre when the committee visited as part of its tour of state prisons.

During his appearance before the committee, led by Adamawa State Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, Usman admitted to committing the theft.

While the committee typically reviews cases to grant pardons to eligible inmates and ease prison overcrowding, it declined to alter Usman’s sentence.

Hong Correctional Centre currently houses 94 inmates, nearly double its intended capacity of 50, highlighting the persistent challenge of prison overcrowding in the state.
