Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has sparked reactions online after openly celebrating the Super Eagles’ failure to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nigeria’s national team was knocked out of the tournament on Wednesday following a tense semi-final clash against host nation Morocco. The match ended in a goalless draw after regulation time and extra time, before Morocco secured a 4–2 victory on penalties.
The Super Eagles were aiming to lift a fourth AFCON title, but their hopes were dashed after Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyeamachi missed their spot kicks during the shootout.
Reacting to the loss on X (formerly Twitter), Speed Darlington appeared pleased with the outcome, using the opportunity to criticize the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He wrote:
“Thank God APC can’t add AFCON to their list of achievements to hide their years of failure. AFCON bye bye.”
His comment quickly gained attention, drawing mixed reactions from fans, with some criticizing his stance while others echoed his political sentiment.
Despite the setback, the Super Eagles are still in contention for a medal and will face Egypt in the third-place playoff, as they look to finish the tournament on a positive note.
