Air India and IndiGo Issue Travel Advisories Following Iran Airspace Closure Amid Unrest

Amid ongoing unrest in Iran, Air India and IndiGo Airlines have issued travel advisories warning passengers of potential flight delays and cancellations due to the sudden closure of Iranian airspace. Both airlines cited safety concerns as the primary reason for altering flight operations, urging travellers to check their flight status and make necessary adjustments to travel plans.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Air India said that flights overflying Iran are now following alternative routes to ensure passenger and crew safety. The airline noted that while rerouting is possible for most flights, some cannot be diverted and are therefore being cancelled. Passengers were advised to verify the status of their flights before leaving for the airport. “Air India regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers due to this unforeseen disruption. Safety of our passengers and crew remains top priority,” the statement read.

The disruption follows the Iranian government’s decision to close its airspace to all flights except those operating to and from Iran with official permission, according to a Reuters report. The closure is initially expected to last for more than two hours, until 7:30 pm ET, but authorities indicated that it could be extended depending on the evolving situation.

The closure comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. A senior Iranian official reportedly warned neighbouring countries that Tehran would target U.S. bases if Washington carried out strikes, prompting the United States to withdraw some personnel from bases in the region.

IndiGo Airlines also issued a similar advisory, stating: “Due to the sudden airspace closure by Iran, some of our international flights are impacted. This development is beyond our control, and we regret any disruption caused to passengers’ travel plans.” The airline encouraged affected passengers to check their website for flexible rebooking options. “We remain committed to keeping you informed and supporting you through this evolving situation,” IndiGo added.

The advisories from both carriers emphasize the fluidity of the situation in Iran and the potential for further disruptions. Airlines globally are monitoring developments closely, and passengers travelling through the region are advised to stay updated on official notices and airline communications to avoid inconveniences.

This is a developing situation, and travellers are being urged to plan ahead, anticipate delays, and make use of rebooking options offered by the airlines. Safety remains the highest priority as the unrest in Iran continues to impact regional air traffic.
