Former First Lady, Dr. Aisha Buhari, has revealed that late President Muhammadu Buhari suffered from a long-standing history of malnutrition, which affected his health during his tenure as president. She claimed that certain influential individuals around the president manipulated him against her, to the point where he began locking the door to his room to prevent her access.
These revelations are detailed in the book “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari” by Dr. Charles Omole, launched at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
According to Aisha Buhari, her husband’s 2017 health crisis was not caused by a mysterious illness or covert plot but stemmed from the disruption of a carefully managed nutrition routine. She explained that she had long overseen his diet in Kaduna, ensuring he received regular meals, vitamins, and supplements tailored to his needs.
“When the presidency’s machinery took over our private lives, I sat with his personal staff, including his physician, the CSO, the housekeeper, and even the DSS Director-General,” she recalled. She described a detailed plan for his diet: timed meals, nutrient powders, oils, and proteins essential for maintaining the health of an elderly man.
However, Aisha Buhari said rumors and fear-mongering began to influence the president. Personal staff allegedly suggested she intended to harm him. “My husband believed them, for a week or so,” she said. “He started locking his room, changed small habits, and the kitchen routine went off script. Meals were delayed or missed, and supplements stopped.”
She noted that Buhari, naturally slender and a light eater, began losing weight and missed lunch for a year. Despite careful management of his diet for over six years prior to moving into Aso Villa, the personal team’s interference disrupted his nutrition, worsening his condition.
Aisha Buhari clarified that her husband was never poisoned and that no exotic fever existed, contrary to some reports. When Buhari was eventually rushed to London, doctors prescribed an even stronger regimen of supplements than what she had been providing.
She concluded that part of the problem was the perception that her husband was now “State Property” rather than her personal spouse, allowing his Villa staff and their backers to override her management of his health.
