Alfie Hewett Falls to Tokito Oda in Wheelchair Masters Singles Final

Great Britain’s Alfie Hewett suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Japan’s world number one Tokito Oda in the men’s singles final of the Wheelchair Masters in Huzhou, China.

The 27-year-old three-time former champion—winner of the Masters in 2017, 2021, and 2023—was on court for just over an hour as 19-year-old Oda produced a commanding performance, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. This was Hewett’s sixth appearance in a Masters singles final, but he was unable to counter the dominance of the young Japanese star.

Oda Extends Dominance Over Hewett

Oda’s win continues a remarkable run against Hewett. The teenager has now claimed 13 wins in 22 encounters with the Briton, including victories in this season’s French Open and Wimbledon men’s singles finals.

While Hewett defeated Oda in the Australian Open singles final in January, securing his 10th Grand Slam singles title, the recent string of losses highlights Oda’s growing supremacy in men’s wheelchair tennis.

Doubles Setback for Hewett and Reid

Hewett also faced disappointment in the men’s doubles final, partnering with Gordon Reid. The British duo were narrowly defeated by Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spaargaren in a thrilling final-set decider on Saturday, leaving Hewett runner-up in both singles and doubles at the Huzhou Masters.

Despite the losses, Hewett remains one of the sport’s elite competitors, with a track record of Grand Slam victories and a strong presence in major international tournaments. His rivalry with Oda continues to provide some of the most exciting and high-quality matches in wheelchair tennis today.

Looking Ahead

Hewett’s focus now shifts to preparing for upcoming tournaments, where he will aim to reclaim dominance and continue building his Grand Slam legacy. Oda, meanwhile, reinforces his position as the world number one and a formidable opponent on all surfaces.
