In a significant push to address the national housing deficit, the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and its private sector partner, BAM Projects and Properties Limited, have announced a target to deliver 10,000 housing units across Nigeria by 2027.
The ambitious goal was unveiled during the inauguration of a new eco-friendly residential estate in Abuja, a project developed through the collaboration of the FHA, FHA Mortgage Bank, and BAM.
A Model for Public-Private Partnership
Dr. Hayatudeen Atiku Anwal, Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority Mortgage Bank, reiterated the FHA’s commitment to bridging Nigeria’s housing gap through sustainable and affordable developments. He stated that the 10,000-unit target aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s broader affordable housing policy and economic vision.
Mansur Mohammed, Managing Director of BAM Projects, described the newly commissioned estate as “a testament to trust, collaboration and vision.” He emphasized that the project demonstrates the private sector’s capacity to complement government efforts in delivering quality housing within agreed timelines.
“This estate is not just about buildings; it’s about community, sustainability, and long-term impact,” Mohammed said, highlighting that the project includes a police station and sanitary facilities as part of its corporate social responsibility to the Lugbe community.
Financing and Future Plans
Dr. Anwal pointed to new government-backed financing opportunities through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and the National Housing Fund (NHF) as key enablers. These initiatives allow citizens to access housing loans of up to ₦100 million at single-digit interest rates, with repayment tenors of up to 20 years.
With Nigeria’s housing deficit estimated at 18 million units, Dr. Anwal expressed confidence that the right partnerships and funding can make the 10,000-unit target achievable. He also commended BAM as a “dependable partner,” noting their successful handling of a 200-home project in Karasana and ongoing work on a 45-hectare mass housing project in the same area.
