Global human rights organisation Amnesty International has condemned a deadly attack by armed gunmen on Gidan Waya, a community in Yarkasuwa, Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State, which left four people dead and 12 others abducted, including children.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the organisation said the attack, which occurred on the night of November 11, 2025, once again exposes the persistent failure of Nigerian authorities to protect citizens and ensure accountability for human rights abuses.
“Amnesty International strongly condemns the gunmen’s attack on Gidan Waya in Yarkasuwa, Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State, in which four people were killed and 12 others abducted — including children aged 13, 14, and 15,” the statement read.
“The attack, which took place last night, is yet another indication of the stunning failure of the Nigerian authorities to protect lives and ensure accountability for human rights crimes.”
Rural Communities Under Siege
The organisation noted that since 2016, rural communities across northern Nigeria have lived under constant threat from armed groups, forcing thousands of families to flee their homes and abandon their farmlands.
“Since 2016, rural communities in some parts of northern Nigeria have been living at the mercy of gunmen. The violence has forced many farmers and their families to flee their homes,” Amnesty International stated.
The group added that it has been documenting an alarming rise in attacks and abductions across several states in the North-West and North-Central regions, including Plateau, Zamfara, southern Kaduna, Benue, and Katsina.
Amnesty International expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Kaduna and neighboring states, emphasizing that the lack of accountability and effective law enforcement has emboldened perpetrators.
Calls for Urgent Action
The organisation urged the Nigerian government to take decisive steps to protect lives, bring perpetrators to justice, and address the growing humanitarian crisis in affected communities.
It reiterated that failure to act would further endanger vulnerable populations and deepen the human rights crisis in the region.
“Authorities must urgently ensure the protection of lives and hold those responsible for these atrocities accountable. No community should have to live in constant fear,” Amnesty said.
