Amnesty International Raises Alarm Over Threats to Activists

Amnesty International Nigeria has expressed concern over the safety of human rights defenders Okechukwu Nwanguma, executive director of RULAAC, and Nonso Nkwa, an independent radio broadcaster in Owerri. Both have reportedly faced threats linked to their efforts to expose alleged abuses at the Tiger Base police detention centre.

In a statement, Amnesty described Nwanguma and Nkwa as “courageous human rights defenders fighting for justice and accountability,” and warned that targeting them for their advocacy puts their security at serious risk.

The organisation called for a thorough investigation into harassment and intimidation against human rights defenders, whistleblowers, and journalists, stressing that threats against individuals speaking out on human rights violations or systemic corruption are unacceptable.
