The Nigeria Police Force has ramped up security in Anambra State ahead of the November 8 governorship election with the deployment of helicopters, drones, and tactical teams.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed in Awka that the deployment forms part of a strategic operational plan to reinforce local formations with additional personnel and advanced technical support. The tactical teams were dispatched from Force Headquarters in Abuja following approval from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Receiving the teams in Awka, Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu lauded the IGP for his commitment to ensuring peace and security. He explained that aerial surveillance would complement land patrols, intelligence operatives, and special squads positioned across the state’s 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
“The combined efforts of the command and tactical operatives will enhance visibility policing, intelligence-driven operations, and rapid response to emerging threats,” Orutugu said. He added that helicopters and drones would enable real-time monitoring of key areas, border communities, and potential flashpoints, allowing quick responses to any security challenges.
The commissioner urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, encouraging them to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via emergency lines. Orutugu reassured the public that the police are committed to providing a secure environment for voters to exercise their rights freely and without intimidation.
