The Anambra State Police Command has reported significant security achievements in 2025, including the rescue of 35 kidnapping victims, arrest of over 300 criminal suspects, and recovery of more than 2,000 arms, ammunition, and explosives, along with over 60 stolen vehicles.
Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, disclosed these figures during an end-of-year press briefing at the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters in Awka. He attributed the successes to proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, and sustained cooperation from residents.
Orutugu highlighted the disruption of multiple kidnapping syndicates, dismantling of criminal hideouts, and strengthening of community policing structures as key achievements. Improved inter-agency collaboration with the DSS, Nigerian Army, Navy, NSCDC, and Immigration Service also contributed to major operational successes.
The commissioner noted a gradual return of normal social life in Ihiala, where community events like weddings and birthdays are now held without harassment.
Operational highlights included the re-arrest of suspects in the killing of late Hon. Justice Azuka in Onitsha, as well as the arrest of suspects linked to the murder of three Cameroonian nationals, with recovery of the victims’ bodies.
While celebrating these achievements, Orutugu acknowledged ongoing challenges, including evolving criminal tactics, misinformation, and occasional non-cooperation from the public.
As the festive season approaches, he announced robust security deployments across the state and urged residents to remain vigilant. He also reminded the public that the use of firecrackers and other explosives is prohibited, and advised compliance with traffic regulations, proper home security, and reporting suspicious activities.
Orutugu reaffirmed the command’s commitment to enhancing safety in Anambra State, promising strengthened capacity, deeper community partnerships, and intensified operations in the coming year.
