Antonio Brown Pleads Not Guilty to Attempted Murder, Claims Self-Defense in Miami Shooting

Former NFL star Antonio Brown has pleaded not guilty to an attempted murder charge, with his attorney asserting that the former All-Pro wide receiver acted in self-defense during a shooting incident at a Miami celebrity boxing event in May 2025.

Brown, who was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Dubai, was extradited back to the United States to face the charges stemming from the incident, which occurred at an event hosted by popular streamer Adin Ross.

Self-Defense Claim

According to Brown’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, the actions taken by Brown were entirely in self-defense. Eiglarsh told the Associated Press:

“The actions he was forced to take were solely in self-defense against the alleged victim’s violent behavior. Brown was attacked that night and acted within his legal right to protect himself.”

The alleged victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, told Miami police that a bullet fired by Brown grazed his neck. Miami authorities stated that Brown fired two shots during the incident, which was captured in footage posted on social media showing a physical altercation involving multiple individuals.

Court Appearance and Bail

Brown appeared virtually in court on November 12, 2025, and was granted a $25,000 bond. He is required to wear an ankle monitor as part of his release conditions. Images from the court proceedings show Brown in a red jail jumpsuit.

During the May incident, footage showed Brown approaching a group of people, holding an object before sounds resembling gunshots were heard. On a subsequent Kick livestream with Adin Ross, Brown claimed he had been “jumped by multiple individuals,” reiterating his self-defense stance.

CTE and Its Possible Role

Brown also stated that he suffers from CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), a neurological condition caused by repeated head trauma, which has been diagnosed postmortem in hundreds of former football players. Brown told Ross:

“I got CTE, I blacked out. I blacked out, Adin. I don’t know what happened.”

NFL Career Background

Antonio Brown enjoyed a 12-year NFL career, playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He last played in the league in 2021. Known for his exceptional skill on the field, Brown’s career has been marked by both athletic success and off-field controversies.

Miami Police Investigation

The Miami Police Department confirmed Brown’s identification as the shooter following a thorough investigation. A spokesperson noted:

“This is just another example of the relentless work and dedication of Miami Police Detectives, working closely with Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, and U.S. Marshals to identify and arrest those who commit crimes in the City of Miami.”

As the legal process unfolds, Brown’s case will continue to attract significant attention due to the high-profile nature of both the individuals involved and the circumstances surrounding the celebrity boxing event.
