“Anyone who says Obi can’t be VP is not a democrat” — Momodu responds to Utomi

Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has challenged comments by political economist Professor Pat Utomi regarding the party’s 2027 presidential ticket. Momodu said anyone insisting that former Anambra State governor Peter Obi cannot serve as a vice-presidential candidate is “not a democrat.”

Momodu shared his reaction on his verified X account on Friday, responding to Utomi’s recent statement that he would withdraw support for Obi if the former governor accepted a vice-presidential role in the emerging opposition coalition.

“Anyone insisting that Obi cannot run behind anyone is definitely not a Democrat who wishes to rescue Nigeria from one-man dictatorship,” Momodu wrote.

While expressing admiration for Utomi, Momodu argued that political success in Nigeria requires pragmatism over idealism.

“Professor Pat Utomi is one of the brightest Nigerians I love and respect. But the Nigerian political landscape is unique, and intellectual brilliance alone rarely wins elections,” he added.

Momodu cited past examples, noting that electability often outweighs perceived brilliance in Nigerian politics. He pointed to the 2023 APC presidential race, where Yemi Osinbajo was seen as highly qualified but the party chose Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its candidate. He also referenced Obi’s rise to national prominence in 2019 when former Vice President Atiku Abubakar selected him as running mate despite opposition from some governors and stakeholders.

Momodu urged Obi to remain a disciplined party member, emphasizing that party unity and humility are key for long-term political impact.

His comments followed a similar call from ADC chieftain Dr Ladan Salihu, who advised Utomi and Obi’s supporters to focus on strengthening the party rather than engaging in early disputes over zoning and candidacy.
