Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The APC announced Mutfwang’s defection on Thursday during its national caucus meeting held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja. The announcement was confirmed by the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yelwata, who described the move as a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With Mutfwang’s entry, the APC now controls all states in the North-Central geopolitical zone, further consolidating its regional dominance, party officials said.
Sources close to the governor had earlier indicated that he was preparing to leave the PDP following months of speculation, consultations, and internal negotiations. A political adviser to the governor had publicly disclosed that Mutfwang was weighing his options amid persistent internal crises within the opposition party.
The defection brings to an end weeks of intense political manoeuvring in Plateau State. While some APC stakeholders initially expressed concern that Mutfwang’s entry could alter existing power structures within the party, others welcomed the move, arguing that it would strengthen the APC’s electoral prospects in the state and the wider region.
Within the PDP, Mutfwang’s exit adds to the party’s growing challenges. The opposition party has been grappling with leadership disputes, factional divisions, and a wave of high-profile defections, which party insiders say have weakened its cohesion nationwide. As of the time of filing this report, the PDP has yet to issue an official statement on the governor’s defection.
Mutfwang’s move follows a broader trend of prominent PDP figures crossing over to the APC as political actors reposition ahead of the 2027 elections. In recent weeks, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara also defected to the APC, citing alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s governance direction and political agenda.
Political analysts view these defections as part of an ongoing realignment that could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next general polls.
