David Beckham, the iconic former England captain, has been formally knighted by King Charles in recognition of his outstanding contributions to football and British society. The 50-year-old football legend, who was named on the King’s Birthday Honours list earlier this year, received the prestigious accolade during a ceremony at Windsor Castle in Berkshire on Tuesday.
Beckham Expresses Pride and Patriotism
“I couldn’t be prouder,” Beckham said following the ceremony. “People know how patriotic I am – I love my country. I’ve always said how important the monarchy is to my family. I’m lucky enough to have travelled around the world, and all people want to talk to me about is our monarchy. It makes me proud.”
Beckham attended the ceremony alongside his wife Victoria and his parents, Sandra and David. Victoria, who was awarded an OBE in 2017 for her services to the fashion industry, designed the elegant suit that her husband wore for the occasion.
“[King Charles] was quite impressed with my suit,” Beckham shared. “He’s the most elegantly dressed man that I know, so he inspired quite a few of my looks over the years and he definitely inspired this look. I looked at old pictures of him in morning suits and I said, ‘OK, that’s what I want to wear’ – so I gave it to my wife, and she made it.”
Football Career and Achievements
Beckham’s illustrious football career includes 115 appearances for England, captaining the Three Lions for six years between 2000 and 2006. He represented England in three World Cups and two European Championships.
He rose through Manchester United’s academy in 1992, spending 11 years with the first team before joining Real Madrid in 2003 for £25 million. Beckham played four years in Spain before moving to Major League Soccer team LA Galaxy. During his MLS tenure, he had loan spells at AC Milan and concluded his professional career at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.
Beyond the Pitch: Humanitarian and Cultural Impact
David Beckham’s influence extends far beyond football. Born in East London, he played a significant role in London securing the 2012 Olympic Games. He has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2005, with a dedicated fund named in his honor in 2015, celebrating a decade-long partnership with the organization.
Beckham, who was previously awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, also queued for over 12 hours to pay respects when the Queen lay in state in 2022. In 2024, he became an ambassador for the King’s Foundation, supporting initiatives in education and environmental awareness for young people.
Additionally, Beckham is involved in football ownership, part-owning League Two side Salford City alongside former Manchester United teammate Gary Neville, and co-owning Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.
Legacy of Sir David Beckham
Beckham’s knighthood celebrates not only his achievements on the football field but also his humanitarian work, cultural contributions, and unwavering patriotism. His story continues to inspire millions worldwide, solidifying his legacy as one of the most influential figures in modern sport.
