Reality television is often a high-pressure environment where emotions run high, alliances are tested, and personal lives can sometimes become fodder for discussion. This dynamic was evident in Rise and Fall Season 1, particularly surrounding contestant Dhanashree Verma, who opened up about sensitive aspects of her personal life on the show. Arjun Bijlani, the winner of the season, recently addressed the controversy, shedding light on his perspective and clarifying the intent behind his interactions with Dhanashree.
During the show, Dhanashree Verma spoke candidly about her past, revealing that her ex-husband, cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, had allegedly cheated on her in the initial months of their marriage. The revelations stirred debate among viewers and fellow contestants, with some questioning whether she was leveraging her personal experiences as part of her game strategy. Arjun Bijlani, however, maintained that his involvement was purely rooted in empathy, not gameplay.
Reflecting on the situation, Arjun said, “She was crying and sharing some things about her past life. I was listening and voiced my opinion calmly because it was just a normal conversation. I didn’t do anything for the game. For me, it was a moment of empathy. She spoke about her personal life out in the open — I would have never done that.” His comments underline that, even in competitive environments, basic human compassion can sometimes be misinterpreted as strategy.
Arjun acknowledged that his gestures of concern drew mixed reactions from other contestants and viewers. “Sometimes people forget that even in a competitive environment, we’re still human. Showing care shouldn’t be seen as weakness,” he explained. He also addressed the broader social perceptions around Dhanashree’s disclosures, noting the double standards that exist when it comes to discussions about relationships and social life. “She said quite a few things — about parties and more. I want to understand, why is it such a taboo for guys to hang out and party? Having said that, even if she was lying or doing all that for the game, how would I know? I was just being considerate,” he remarked.
Another incident Arjun discussed involved fellow contestant Arbaaz Patel, who reportedly made comments regarding Dhanashree hugging other contestants. Arjun clarified his approach in handling the situation. “When I got to know what all he had said, I told him, ‘She’s not your girlfriend or someone important to you.’ Arbaaz doesn’t get to make such comments. But when I saw that Dhanashree herself wasn’t reacting, who am I to interfere?” he explained, highlighting the delicate balance between defending a friend and respecting personal boundaries.
Arjun further emphasized the importance of maintaining discretion and respecting the wishes of fellow contestants in the show’s high-pressure environment. “I knew certain things, but who am I to say anything or come between them? As a friend, I wanted to clarify misunderstandings but also respected their wish to keep certain things private. I made sure nobody told that particular part to others. That was the way they wanted to play the game, and I never interfered because it wasn’t my zone,” he stated.
His perspective offers a nuanced view of life behind the scenes on reality television. It underscores that contestants often navigate complex social dynamics while maintaining their own principles and empathy. In competitive settings like Rise and Fall, gestures of concern, friendships, and ethical choices can be misconstrued, leading to unnecessary speculation. Arjun’s approach demonstrates that compassion and respect for privacy can coexist with the strategic demands of a reality show.
By speaking out, Arjun Bijlani not only clarified his own role in the controversy but also highlighted a broader point about the treatment of women in competitive environments and the perception of emotional expression. His insistence on empathy over opportunism serves as a reminder that behind the drama of reality television, human emotions and personal values continue to play a central role.
