Liverpool FC manager Arne Slot has spoken out amid rising concerns over his squad’s depth and the club’s faltering form this season. Despite a recent run of disappointing results, including a shock 3-0 defeat at Anfield to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup and a string of league losses, Slot maintains confidence in his players and the club’s recruitment strategy.
Liverpool Struggle Despite Heavy Summer Investment
The Dutch manager, who led Liverpool to a historic Premier League title in his debut campaign last season, has faced scrutiny in recent weeks. After a blistering start to the 2025/26 season, winning their first seven matches across all competitions, Liverpool have since suffered six defeats in their last seven games, slipping to seventh in the Premier League. This downturn has raised questions about squad depth, player availability, and Slot’s rotation policy.
The timing of this slump is especially notable given Liverpool’s unprecedented spending during the summer transfer window. The club splashed £415 million, marking the most expensive summer transfer window in European football history. Key signings included Alexander Isak for a British-record £125 million, as well as top defensive and midfield reinforcements. Yet, despite the spending spree, the Reds were eliminated from the Carabao Cup and sit seven points behind league leaders Arsenal.
Slot Defends Squad Quality Amid Injury Setbacks
In the wake of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup exit, where Slot fielded a youthful, heavily rotated side, he hinted at concerns over squad depth—citing the challenge of competing without senior stars. But ahead of Saturday’s crucial clash against Aston Villa at Anfield, Slot reversed course, announcing he is “completely happy” with his team.
“We miss nothing. I am completely happy with the team and with all the quality that we have,” Slot stated confidently in the pre-match press conference.
Several high-profile injuries, including those to Alisson Becker, Jeremie Frimpong, and Ryan Gravenberch, have limited Slot’s options. Star striker Alexander Isak also missed pre-season while forcing a move from Newcastle, further complicating squad preparations.
Can Liverpool Bounce Back?
Slot believes the squad remains strong enough to compete on all fronts, provided they can avoid further injuries and rebuild team cohesion.
“I am a firm believer that 20 or 21 players is enough, but you have to keep them fit as we did last season,” Slot added.
The pressure is on as Liverpool look to regain momentum and prove their summer spending was not in vain. With the Premier League table tightening and fan frustrations growing, Saturday’s showdown with Villa will be a test of character—and perhaps a turning point in their season.
