Australia captain Pat Cummins is set to make his long-awaited return for the third Ashes Test against England, a match that could determine the fate of the series. The fast bowler, who missed the opening two Tests due to a back injury, has been officially recalled to the squad ahead of the Adelaide Test beginning on 17 December.
Cummins’ comeback marks the only change to the Australian squad following their dominant eight-wicket victory in Brisbane, a win that placed them 2–0 up in the five-match series. With this advantage, Australia need just a draw in Adelaide to retain the Ashes, while a win would seal the series with two matches to spare.
Cummins Nearing Full Fitness After Long Absence
Despite not having played since July, Cummins has been training intensively with the national squad during the first two Tests. There were even suggestions he might feature in the second Test after participating in a public selection meeting, but stand-in captain Steve Smith continued to lead the side.
According to Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey, Cummins has shown great progress:
“He looks like he’s moving really well. He’s been around the group the whole time with lots of energy.”
His return will provide Australia with renewed firepower, especially with fellow fast bowler Josh Hazlewood ruled out for the remainder of the series due to hamstring and Achilles issues.
Squad Updates: Lyon Likely to Return, Richardson in Training
Off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who was left out of the Brisbane Test, is expected to come back into the playing XI in Adelaide. If both Lyon and Cummins are selected, it may result in Brendan Doggett and Michael Neser missing out.
Fast bowler Jhye Richardson also continues his comeback journey following a shoulder injury and will train in Adelaide, although his return is anticipated later in the series.
Selection Questions: Khawaja or Inglis?
Australia must also make a decision regarding opener Usman Khawaja, who has been sidelined with a back injury. In his absence, Travis Head and Jake Weatherald have formed a strong opening partnership, which may force Khawaja to compete with Josh Inglis for a middle-order position.
England Seek Historic Comeback
While Australia returned home between Tests, England opted for a short break in Noosa, hoping to regroup after a challenging start to the series. England need to break a 17-Test winless streak on Australian soil to remain competitive, having never overturned a 2–0 deficit in Ashes history.
Despite Australia’s strong position, Carey stressed that the team cannot become complacent:
“We know England are a very good cricket team… We were in a similar position in England last year and didn’t win that series.”
Australia famously squandered a 2–0 lead during the 2023 Ashes in England, ultimately drawing the series 2–2.
With Cummins’ return, strong momentum, and home conditions, Australia head into the third Test as favourites. However, England’s determination to fight back ensures an exciting contest ahead at the Adelaide Oval.
