Singer and pastor Olubankole Wellington (Banky W) addressed growing debates around church teachings on wealth. He cautioned against sweeping generalizations that equate the failings of some churches with the entire Christian community.
Banky W criticized both extremes:
- Prosperity gospel – falsely equates faith with immense wealth.
- Poverty gospel – falsely glorifies lack and extreme deprivation.
He emphasized the true gospel message: God provides for your needs and blesses you sufficiently to be a blessing to others. The faith is not about becoming a billionaire like Dangote or Otedola, nor about living in extreme poverty.
While acknowledging that some churches have abused these teachings, he urged Nigerians not to paint all churches with the same brush, highlighting the need for balance and discernment.
