Bauchi Primary Health Centre in Dire State, Lacks Power, Drugs, and Beds – Report

A civic technology organization, MonITNG, has sounded the alarm over the deplorable condition of Bujala Basic Health Care Centre in Tiyin B Ward, Warji Local Government Area, Bauchi State, describing it as a “painful symbol of long-standing neglect.”

The centre, the only healthcare facility serving over 2,500 residents and nearby villages, is reportedly unsafe for both patients and staff.

Poor Infrastructure and Facilities

Observations by MonITNG’s Tracka team revealed that the building has deep cracks, a leaking roof, and only three beds, all without mattresses. The facility lacks electricity, essential drugs, functional toilets, and proper systems for patient records.

The laboratory is unequipped, and the labour room is empty, forcing pregnant women to give birth at home without skilled care, exposing both mothers and newborns to serious health risks.

Severe Staffing Shortages

Staffing is extremely limited, with only one Junior Community Health Extension Worker, one maternity attendant, and two volunteers attending to the entire population.

MonITNG emphasized the stark contrast between Bauchi State’s 2024 budget of ₦93 billion for health and education and the neglect of rural primary health centres.

Mismanagement of Funds

The group also highlighted reports that ₦4.65 billion, originally meant for motorcycles for state operations, yielded no motorcycles. MonITNG noted that the funds could have refurbished approximately 46 primary health centres, providing electricity, functional labs, delivery rooms, stocked pharmacies, and sufficient staff.

Call for Immediate Action

MonITNG urged the Bauchi State Government, Ministry of Health, BSPHCDA, and Warji LGA to urgently rebuild the facility, provide reliable power and clean water, supply beds and essential drugs, and deploy qualified health workers to restore basic healthcare services.

Residents of Bujala joined the call for swift intervention, warning that the current situation leaves thousands exposed to life-threatening health risks.A civic technology organization, MonITNG, has sounded the alarm over the deplorable condition of Bujala Basic Health Care Centre in Tiyin B Ward, Warji Local Government Area, Bauchi State, describing it as a “painful symbol of long-standing neglect.”
