BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 Shortlist Revealed

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 shortlist has been officially announced, highlighting six athletes who have delivered extraordinary performances over the past year. Fans can vote for their favourite during the live broadcast on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer on Thursday, 18 December 2025.

The nominees for the main award are: Hannah Hampton, Chloe Kelly, Ellie Kildunne, Luke Littler, Rory McIlroy, and Lando Norris.

Celebrating a Year of Sporting Excellence

The programme, presented by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott, and Clare Balding, will broadcast live from MediaCityUK in Salford, celebrating a year packed with unforgettable sporting moments.

“This has been a breathtaking year for sport, driven by athletes whose performances belong in the history books. Each one has delivered moments of pure brilliance that have defined 2025. It’s been incredible to watch, and I can’t wait to honour their achievements, and to see who the nation chooses as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025.”

In addition to the main award, viewers will also vote for Team of the Year, with nominees announced on 15 December. Other prizes to be awarded include Young Sports Personality of the Year, Coach of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, and the Helen Rollason Award, along with the World Sport Star award, for which voting is already open.

The Nominees

Hannah Hampton – Football

  • Age: 25
  • Achievements: Hampton won the Yashin Trophy for the world’s best female goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or awards. She was instrumental in England’s European Championship victory, saving two penalties in the final’s shootout and earning player of the match. Hampton also helped Chelsea complete a domestic treble, winning 13 clean sheets in 22 WSL games to claim the Golden Glove.

Chloe Kelly – Football

  • Age: 27
  • Achievements: Kelly had a spectacular turnaround from uncertainty at the start of the year to European glory. She scored the decisive penalty for England in the Euro 2025 final, contributed crucial penalties in the quarter-finals, and netted a last-minute semi-final winner. At club level, she helped Arsenal win the Champions League, finishing fifth in the Women’s Ballon d’Or voting.

Ellie Kildunne – Rugby Union

  • Age: 26
  • Achievements: Kildunne played a pivotal role in England’s Women’s Rugby World Cup victory, scoring five tries in total. After missing the quarter-final due to concussion, she returned to score twice in the semi-final against France and dazzled in the final against Canada with a solo try. Earlier in 2025, she helped England secure a Grand Slam in the Six Nations and scored 14 tries for Harlequins at club level.

Luke Littler – Darts

  • Age: 18
  • Achievements: Littler became the youngest darts world champion at age 17, defeating Michael van Gerwen. He subsequently won the World Matchplay and Grand Slam of Darts, completing the PDC Triple Crown and rising to world number one, breaking Van Gerwen’s previous record as the youngest to top the rankings.

Rory McIlroy – Golf

  • Age: 36
  • Achievements: McIlroy achieved a career Grand Slam by winning the Masters, his first major victory since 2014. He also contributed to Europe’s Ryder Cup victory in the United States and won the Players Championship, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Irish Open, and his seventh Race to Dubai title, capping off an outstanding year.

Lando Norris – Formula 1

  • Age: 26
  • Achievements: Norris became the 11th Briton to win a Formula 1 drivers’ championship, achieving a dramatic season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Despite trailing teammate Oscar Piastri, Norris secured McLaren’s first drivers’ championship since 2008, finishing just two points ahead of Max Verstappen. His victories in Mexico and Brazil were pivotal in clinching the title.

The public can vote for the main award and for Team of the Year during the live show on BBC One or via the BBC iPlayer. Voting details will be announced during the programme, giving fans the opportunity to select the athlete who has inspired them most in 2025.
