Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic has achieved a remarkable milestone, winning her second WTA title since becoming a mother with a commanding victory over Linda Noskova in the Pan Pacific Open final. The 28-year-old showcased her skill and determination, defeating Noskova 6-2, 6-3 to secure her 10th career WTA title.
A Triumphant Return to Tokyo
Bencic’s journey back to the top of women’s tennis has been inspiring. Just 10 months after welcoming her first child and less than four months after returning from over a year of maternity leave, she captured her first title of the year in Abu Dhabi. The Pan Pacific Open victory reinforces her successful comeback.
“I feel like Tokyo and Japan is a happy place in my career, a place where I’ve had good success and I just love being here,” Bencic said after the win.
“I had a deja vu moment on court. I had match point on the same side of the court, went for the same serve, and was telling myself the same things. I had goosebumps. It was really special.”
Bencic previously reached the Pan Pacific Open final 10 years ago, losing to Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets. This time, she dominated Noskova from the first point, leaving little doubt about her quality and focus.
From Low Ranking to Top 15
When Bencic returned to the tour in October 2024, her world ranking had plummeted to 1,213. Through consistent performances and unwavering determination, she has climbed to 13th in the world, proving that motherhood and professional tennis can coexist at the highest level.
Earlier this year, Bencic reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek, demonstrating her continued presence among the elite players on the WTA Tour.
“I’m really enjoying my time back on tour and I think it’s showing in the results. I couldn’t be more happy and I’m definitely surprised. This was definitely not planned,” Bencic said.
“It’s hard work, but it’s a lot of self-belief and mental belief as well. I’m really happy to have this confirmation that I’m able to try to even beat my best ranking from before.”
Linda Noskova’s Challenge
The 20-year-old Linda Noskova was aiming to build on her recent form, having also reached the final of the China Open earlier this month. Despite the loss, her consistent performances at a young age highlight her potential as one of the rising stars of women’s tennis.
Looking Ahead for Belinda Bencic
Bencic’s Pan Pacific Open victory marks a significant moment in her career, proving that returning to professional sport after maternity leave is possible at the highest level. With her confidence restored and ranking climbing, Bencic will be a player to watch in the upcoming Grand Slam tournaments and WTA events.
Her story is not only one of talent but also of resilience, determination, and mental strength, inspiring both athletes and fans worldwide.
