Ben Gannon-Doak Confident Scotland Will Reach 2026 World Cup

Scotland winger Ben Gannon-Doak has declared he has “no doubts” that the national team will qualify for next year’s 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Steve Clarke’s squad prepares for two decisive qualifying matches in Greece and Denmark.

Scotland’s World Cup Qualification Challenge

The Scots are already assured of a play-off place but are targeting automatic qualification. A draw or victory in Greece on Saturday, followed by a win in the winner-takes-all clash against Denmark next Tuesday, would secure Scotland’s spot in the tournament.

Speaking to BBC Scotland during Scotland’s warm-weather training camp in Antalya, Turkey, the 20-year-old Bournemouth winger exuded confidence:
“I have no doubt in my mind that we’re going to go [to the World Cup].”

Gannon-Doak’s optimism is grounded in preparation and teamwork rather than youthful bravado.

A Humbling Journey to the Premier League

At just 16, Gannon-Doak left home to join Liverpool’s academy, an experience that “humbled” him and showed the high standards required at the top level. The summer transfer to Bournemouth for £25 million underscored his rapid rise in English football, making him one of the brightest young talents in Scotland’s squad.

“When you join a club of that stature, you see how high the level can really go,” he explained. “It humbles you a lot but also shows that when you do well against those players, you can do it against anyone.”

Despite the growing expectations, Gannon-Doak remains grounded:
“I don’t really feel that responsibility, to be honest. We’ve actually got a really good squad as well, so it’s on all of us to play well as a team.”

Focused Ahead of Greece Clash

Gannon-Doak missed Scotland’s Nations League play-off in March due to injury but started in last month’s narrow victory over Greece, a game that showcased the squad’s resilience. He acknowledged the challenge ahead:
“They’ll be looking for a bit of revenge this weekend. We’re aware we weren’t at our best last time, but we still won, which is a sign of a good side. We’re relaxed, and when it’s time, we’ll focus and get the job done.”

Despite being a rising star and attracting attention from the Tartan Army, the winger maintains a modest approach, preferring his performances on the pitch to speak for themselves.

Scotland’s Squad Depth and World Cup Ambitions

Clarke’s squad is built on experience and youth, blending seasoned internationals with emerging talents like Gannon-Doak. The team’s balance has given Scotland confidence in navigating the final hurdles to qualify for a men’s World Cup for the first time in a generation.

The match in Piraeus, Greece, and the subsequent showdown with Denmark will be crucial for Scotland’s hopes. With players like Gannon-Doak stepping up, the team looks ready to secure a historic World Cup berth, carrying the hopes of supporters across the country.
