Residents of Zaki Biam in Ukum Local Government Area, Benue State are living in fear as criminal activities—including kidnapping threats, motorcycle theft, and suspected cult operations—rise in the community.
A source in the town told reporters that residents have been receiving threatening phone calls from unknown individuals demanding money under the threat of abduction.
“People are scared because these callers are organized and sound serious. We need urgent intervention before things escalate,” the source said.
The insecurity is reportedly worsened by a suspected cult group that reportedly meets at the shop of their alleged chairman, located at the former SSS office along Yam Market Bypass. “These boys meet both during the day and late at night. Their activities are suspicious, and the community is anxious about what they are planning,” he added.
Motorcycle thefts have also surged, with thieves targeting riders after dark. Residents say the situation has restricted nighttime movement, as many rely on motorcycles for transportation and business.
Kidnapping threats have added another layer of fear. One local POS operator reportedly paid N100,000 to criminals who threatened abduction if he did not comply.
“Imagine receiving a call telling you to send money or you will be taken away. That is the fear people here live with daily,” the source lamented.
Residents are appealing for immediate intervention from security agencies, warning that the situation could worsen if not addressed promptly.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful at press time.
