“Beyond The Surface” Exhibition Highlights Women’s Resilience and Strength

An art exhibition, Beyond The Surface, currently running at Oluwole Omofemi Art Studio and Gallery, Ibadan, showcases the resilience, identity, and inner strength of women through the works of seven female artists. The participating artists—Adelani Adedoyin, Abimbola Sadiq, Jane Ugah, Ejimaja Ajodo, Akindunjoye Rebecca, Ayansola Rebecca, and Naomi Oyeniyi—are all members of the Female Artists Association of Nigeria.

The exhibition explores womanhood from deeply personal perspectives, drawing on memory, lived experiences, and cultural identity, while contributing to the broader discourse on women’s evolving roles in Nigeria’s art scene. Guest artists Onofeghara Emmanuel and Ajenifuja Abiodun also feature, adding depth to the narrative and reinforcing art as a shared space for empathy, reflection, and dialogue.

Curator Abiola Adeleye, Gallery Manager at Oluwole Omofemi Art Studio, explained that the theme emerged organically:

“I didn’t begin with a rigid theme. I simply asked the artists to paint from who they are. As their statements and works came in, a natural thread emerged: resilience, identity, and a quiet but enduring strength.”

The collection balances personal introspection with collective experience, offering viewers an intimate insight into the emotions and histories shaping the artists’ identities.

The exhibition aligns with the vision of Oluwole Omofemi, internationally recognised Nigerian visual artist and founder of the gallery, who has positioned the space as a nurturing ground for emerging talent. Omofemi emphasises:

“Art is not just to be seen. It is to be shared, understood, and felt.”

Sponsored by Topprimo Water and Lyra World, the exhibition underscores the importance of sustained investment in Nigeria’s cultural and creative sectors. Running from November 23 to 29, 2025, it is located at 26 Bashorun Apampa Street, Jericho Reservation Area, Ibadan.

More than a showcase, Beyond The Surface invites viewers to reflect:

What truths lie beneath the surface—waiting to be seen?

Through layered colours and profound storytelling, the exhibition celebrates women’s resilience and affirms the power of authentic artistic voices in challenging prevailing narratives.c
