Borussia Dortmund strengthened their position in the Champions League group stage with a convincing 4–0 win over Villarreal, moving up to fourth in the table. Serhou Guirassy was the star of the night, scoring twice and playing a major role in Dortmund’s commanding performance.
The Bundesliga side took control just before half-time. In first-half stoppage time, Guirassy opened the scoring with a close-range header after Waldemar Anton helped direct the ball into his path. Villarreal immediately appealed for a handball against Anton, prompting a lengthy VAR review. After several minutes of analysis, the goal was allowed to stand, giving Dortmund a crucial advantage at the break.
The match swung even more in Dortmund’s favor early in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Villarreal were reduced to 10 men when former Tottenham defender Juan Foyth was sent off. Foyth attempted to block a shot from Karim Adeyemi on the goal line but was judged to have used his hand instead of his chest, resulting in a straight red card and a penalty for Borussia Dortmund.
Guirassy stepped up to take the spot kick, but Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior produced an impressive save. Unfortunately for the visitors, the rebound fell perfectly into Guirassy’s path, and he calmly slotted the ball home to make it 2–0.
Just six minutes later, Dortmund extended their lead to 3–0. A defensive clearance from Villarreal ricocheted off Adeyemi and bounced directly into the net — a stroke of luck that underlined Dortmund’s growing dominance.
The German side earned another penalty when Adeyemi was fouled by Sergi Cardona, giving them a chance to add a fourth. With Guirassy already substituted, Fabio Silva took responsibility but struck the crossbar, missing the opportunity to further widen the gap.
Dortmund weren’t done, though. In second-half stoppage time, Daniel Svensson powered home a well-placed header from Pascal Gross’ precise cross, sealing a 4–0 victory and sending the home fans into celebration.
With the win, Dortmund climbed to 10 points from their five matches, placing them in an excellent position to finish inside the top eight and avoid the play-off round. Meanwhile, Villarreal sit third from bottom with just a single point, leaving them at serious risk of an early Champions League exit.
The Spanish side will feel frustrated by how the night unfolded. Before Dortmund’s opener, Villarreal thought they had taken the lead through Tani Oluwaseyi, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Moments later, Pape Gueye narrowly missed with a shot from 15 yards, failing to capitalise on a promising chance.
As Dortmund settled into the match, they became increasingly dangerous on the counterattack. Adeyemi, who was lively throughout, produced a remarkable solo run that nearly led to a goal, but Foyth intervened with a crucial clearance before later being sent off.
Ultimately, Guirassy’s decisive goals and Dortmund’s relentless pressure were enough to secure their third win in this season’s Champions League campaign. The German club now hold momentum heading into their final group fixtures, while Villarreal must regroup quickly to keep their hopes alive.
