Lucknow, October 19, 2025: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh underscored the formidable capabilities of India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, developed jointly with Russia, during the rollout of the first missiles from the new Integration and Testing Facility in Lucknow.
Speed and Range
- Supersonic Velocity: Mach 2.8 — nearly three times the speed of sound.
- Current Range: Up to 500 km.
- Upcoming Variant: Expected to reach 800 km, expanding strategic coverage.
“Every inch of Pakistan’s territory is now within the reach of BrahMos,” Rajnath Singh stated, referring to Operation Sindoor, the May military operation in which BrahMos was deployed.
Versatility and Deployment
- Launch Platforms: Land, air, and sea, making it a multi-domain weapon.
- Warhead & Guidance: Features a traditional warhead with an advanced guided system, ensuring precision strikes at supersonic speeds.
- Strategic Role: Recognized as the backbone of the Indian Armed Forces for its combination of speed, accuracy, and long-range strike capability.
BrahMos Integration & Testing Facility, Lucknow
- Second facility in India after Hyderabad.
- Annual Production: ~100 missile systems.
- Projected Turnover: ₹3,000 crore starting next financial year.
- Significance: Marks India’s transition from a defence importer to a global exporter, with recent contracts worth ₹4,000 crore signed with two countries.
“BrahMos is not just a missile, but a symbol of India’s growing indigenous capabilities,” said Rajnath Singh.
Strategic Implications
- Deterrence: Puts entire Pakistan within reach, reinforcing India’s defensive and offensive posture.
- Rapid Strike: Supersonic speed reduces enemy reaction time, making interception difficult.
- Global Export Potential: Already exported to the Philippines, with further international collaborations planned.
The BrahMos missile program highlights India’s technological edge in supersonic cruise missile systems and its increasing role as a defence equipment exporter, signaling both strategic strength and economic potential in the global defence market.
