President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended his planned trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, following renewed security concerns in Nigeria, including the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.
The development was announced in a statement on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Tinubu has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the wider Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State. The President also directed the police to launch a full-scale manhunt for the bandits who attacked the Christ Apostolic Church congregation.
Tinubu had been scheduled to depart Abuja on Wednesday for the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa and later proceed to Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit.
“Disturbed by the security breaches in Kebbi State and Monday’s attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, President Tinubu decided to suspend his departure,” Onanuga said.
He added that the President is awaiting detailed reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima—who visited Kebbi on his behalf—as well as from the police and the Department of State Services regarding the Kwara attack.
Tinubu reiterated his directive to all security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the 24 abducted schoolgirls and ensure their safe return.
