Brighton & Hove Albion have reversed their controversial plans to remove the club’s Heritage Tile Wall at the Amex Stadium after widespread criticism from supporters.
The Heritage Tile Wall, a beloved feature of the stadium, features over 2,500 tiles funded by fans, each commemorating personal messages, memories, and milestones. The club had initially planned to dismantle the wall, citing concerns that it was “falling foul of time and weather conditions,” and replace it with a virtual ‘Fan Wall’ where supporters could upload photos for £45 as part of the club’s 125th-anniversary celebrations.
Fans Respond With Petition
The announcement sparked significant backlash from supporters, who viewed the wall as a key part of the club’s heritage and connection to fans. A petition urging Brighton to reconsider quickly gained momentum, surpassing 3,400 signatures, reflecting the deep emotional attachment supporters have to the tiles.
In response, Brighton chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber confirmed that the club would instead install a physical replacement wall, ensuring that all existing messages are preserved.
Club Apology and Commitment to Fans
Barber addressed fans directly in a letter, saying:
“We are aware that the club’s decision to find a new format to recreate and preserve the messages on the heritage tiles has caused distress to some fans and confusion for others. We are very sorry for this. We are fully aware that many tiles represent significant sentimental and emotional moments and connections in people’s lives, hence our desire to protect and preserve the messages.”
He added that the club had “listened very carefully” to fan feedback and would not merge the heritage messages with the new 125 Wall, as had originally been proposed. All messages from the current tiles will be transferred for free to the new installation.
Timeline for the New Wall
Brighton aim to have the new Heritage Tile Wall in place during the 2026-27 season. Barber confirmed that nothing will be done to the existing wall until the end of the current season, ensuring that fans can continue to enjoy the iconic display in its current form.
This decision highlights Brighton’s commitment to its fanbase and acknowledges the sentimental value of fan contributions, preserving a unique tradition while modernizing elements of the stadium for the club’s milestone anniversary.
