Brisbane Heat stunned cricket fans worldwide with a breathtaking performance in the Men’s Big Bash League (BBL), chasing down a massive total of 258 to defeat the Perth Scorchers by eight wickets at the Gabba. This remarkable victory set new records in the competition and showcased the explosive batting talent of Jack Wildermuth and Matt Renshaw.
Wildermuth and Renshaw Rewrite Big Bash History
In an unforgettable display of T20 cricket brilliance, all-rounder Jack Wildermuth scored his maiden T20 century, finishing unbeaten on 110 off just 54 balls. Alongside him, opener Matt Renshaw also notched his first T20 century, scoring 102 from 51 balls. Together, they forged a monumental 212-run partnership — a record Big Bash League stand — propelling the Heat toward the highest successful chase in BBL history.
Renshaw reached his century off 48 balls but was unfortunately run out after suffering from cramping. Wildermuth, undeterred, carried the Heat through the final overs, displaying composure and aggression in equal measure.
Dramatic Finish at the Gabba
The final over was a nail-biting affair. Heat needed nine runs off six balls. With Max Bryant injured mid-run and retiring hurt on 28 off 16, the pressure fell entirely on Wildermuth. Demonstrating nerves of steel, he smashed the penultimate delivery to backward point and capitalized on a misfield, completing the required runs and sealing the victory.
This historic chase is now the third highest successful chase in all T20 cricket and marked the first instance of two players scoring centuries in a second innings of a T20 match. Both Renshaw and Wildermuth struck five fours and nine sixes each, thrilling a crowd of 25,000 fans in Brisbane.
Perth Scorchers Post Massive Total
The Perth Scorchers had earlier posted a formidable 257-6 in their 20 overs, powered by stellar innings from Finn Allen (79 off 38 balls) and Cooper Connolly (77 off 37 balls). Despite their efforts, the Scorchers could not contain the Heat’s explosive batting lineup in response.
Captain Nathan McSweeney was unable to contribute with the bat after rolling his ankle during the Scorchers’ innings, making the Heat’s achievement even more remarkable.

Player Reactions
Matt Renshaw described the team’s mindset:
“The message at the break was just to trust ourselves. Funnily enough, I hit the ball terribly in the indoor nets during the interval. We had some luck on our side, but knowing how well they batted gave us confidence that the wicket was excellent and the target was achievable.”
Jack Wildermuth’s calm and powerful innings will be remembered as one of the greatest individual performances in BBL history, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
Big Bash League Standings
With this win, Brisbane Heat now have one win and one loss, tied on points with Perth Scorchers. Due to a superior net run-rate, the Heat are positioned fifth on the BBL ladder, while the Scorchers sit in third place.
Fans can expect more thrilling encounters as the BBL 2025-26 season continues, with both teams demonstrating that high-scoring, record-breaking cricket is alive and well.
