Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has revealed that late President Muhammadu Buhari once believed rumors circulating in Aso Rock that she intended to harm him.
According to Aisha Buhari, these rumors caused the former president to start locking his room and altering daily routines.
Her account appears in Buhari’s biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, written by Dr. Charles Omole and launched at the State House on Monday.
She clarified that Buhari’s health issues were not due to any mysterious illness or poisoning but were a result of mismanaged medications and supplements. Buhari passed away in July 2025 at a London clinic and was later buried in Daura, Nigeria.
Mrs. Buhari noted that she had long overseen her husband’s meals and supplements, ensuring he maintained strength despite his history of malnutrition symptoms.
“Elderly bodies require gentle, consistent support. He didn’t have a chronic illness. Keeping him on schedule was crucial,” she said.
However, she explained that after the gossip spread, her husband believed for about a week that she intended to harm him. “He began locking his room, changed small habits, and most importantly, meals were delayed or missed, and supplements were stopped. For a year, he skipped lunch, and his nutrition was mismanaged,” she added.
