Bulls Steal the Show at Alanganallur Jallikattu; Tamil Nadu CM Announces Government Job for Best Tamer

Madurai: The centuries-old spirit of Tamil Nadu’s traditional bull-taming sport, Jallikattu, came alive at Alanganalluron Saturday, captivating spectators with displays of raw power and daring skill. Hundreds of ferocious bulls roamed the arena, testing the courage and agility of participants, as the crowd cheered the thrilling spectacle.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who attended the event to witness the sport at close quarters, announced a government job in the Animal Husbandry Department for the best tamer who successfully embraces the maximum number of bulls during the competition. He also revealed plans to establish a sophisticated Jallikattu training and treatment centre in Alanganallur at an estimated cost of ₹2 crore, a move aimed at further supporting the traditional sport and ensuring the welfare of the bulls.

“The Madurai soil is known for bravery. We become valorous by witnessing the world-famous Jallikattu. The strong bulls are the pride of Tamil Nadu,” the Chief Minister said during the event. He further added, “I hope this will make you happy,” while distributing gold rings to the tamers for their daring efforts and to the bull owners whose animals showcased extraordinary strength and resilience, exiting the arena without being subdued.

Thrills and Challenges in the Arena

The event witnessed intense competition, as bulls shook their heads, planted their hooves firmly, and resisted the tamers’ attempts to grasp their humps. Most of the tamers, who were young men from across the state, attempted to embrace the bulls but often found themselves outmatched by the sheer strength and agility of the animals. In such cases, the bulls were declared the winners, underscoring the unpredictable and exhilarating nature of Jallikattu.

At least 14 people sustained injuries during the event, with four requiring hospital treatment. Earlier in the day, a bull had run amok at the airport as the Chief Minister arrived, causing panic among onlookers. The animal was eventually tied with a rope and taken away safely by its owners.

One of the highlights of the event involved a bull that toppled a determined tamer attempting to grab its hump. For several minutes, the bull struggled to regain balance, but fellow tamers intervened to help the animal rise, allowing it to run out of the arena without injury to the tamer.

Notable Bulls and Owners

Several bulls captured attention for their unmatched strength and spirit. Among them were a bull owned by former AIADMK state minister C. Vijayabhaskar, one owned by actor Soori, and another owned by Sri Lankan politician Senthil Thondaiman. These bulls were declared unstoppable, earning gold coins for their respective owners.

In total, 465 tamers participated in the final Jallikattu event for the Pongal 2026 season, with nearly 825 bulls released from the traditional entrance, Vaadi Vaasal, into the arena. The festival of bravery was inaugurated by State Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister P. Moorthi, in the presence of Madurai District Collector Pravin Kumar and other senior officials, marking one of the most eagerly anticipated cultural events in the state.

Celebration of Tradition and Valor

Jallikattu, celebrated annually during the Pongal festival, is not only a sport but a cultural emblem of Tamil Nadu’s agrarian heritage. The event highlights the bravery of the youth and the strength of native bulls, symbolizing a deep bond between humans and animals in the region. Over the years, efforts to preserve the sport have included safety regulations for both tamers and bulls, veterinary care facilities, and community awareness programs, ensuring that tradition continues responsibly.

By linking the sport to government incentives such as employment opportunities and professional training centers, the Tamil Nadu government has signaled its commitment to promoting Jallikattu while safeguarding the welfare of the bulls and the participants. Experts and community leaders have emphasized that such initiatives encourage youth participation, foster local pride, and maintain the cultural significance of the centuries-old tradition.

With enthusiastic crowds, valiant tamers, and powerful bulls, the Alanganallur Jallikattu this year was a vivid demonstration of courage, strategy, and skill. As the sport continues to evolve with safety measures and government support, it remains a unique cultural spectacle that draws attention from across India and beyond, celebrating valor, tradition, and community spirit.
