Burnley Midfielder Hannibal Mejbri Handed Four-Match Ban for Spitting at Fans

Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been suspended for four matches and fined £15,000 following an incident in which he spat at Leeds United supporters during a Premier League fixture in October. The 22-year-old Tunisia international admitted the misconduct charge, which was reviewed and sanctioned by the Football Association (FA).

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred in the 67th minute of Burnley’s 2-0 home victory over Leeds United on 18 October 2025. Reports indicate that Mejbri spat in the direction of Leeds fans seated in the away section of Turf Moor, prompting a complaint to Lancashire Police, who briefly investigated the matter.

Following the FA hearing, the Regulatory Commission confirmed the penalty, stating:
“It was alleged that the player acted in breach of the laws of the game and/or in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters around the 67th minute. Hannibal Mejbri subsequently admitted the charge, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match ban and £15,000 fine following a hearing.”

Matches Missed

Mejbri’s suspension will see him absent from four Premier League fixtures this month, including:

  • Home match vs Newcastle United (30 December)
  • Away matches vs Fulham and Bournemouth
  • Home fixture vs Everton

These absences come at a crucial time for Burnley, who have lost their past five league games and currently sit 19th in the Premier League after promotion from the Championship last season.

Player Background

Hannibal Mejbri joined Burnley in August 2024 from Manchester United in a deal potentially worth £9.4 million. The midfielder has since made 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal for the Clarets.

The 22-year-old has represented Tunisia internationally and has been a regular starter for Burnley since his transfer, showing promise in midfield despite the disciplinary setback.

Implications for Burnley

Mejbri’s suspension adds to Burnley’s challenges as the club battles to avoid relegation from the Premier League. Managerial decisions and team selection will be tested as Burnley face a series of difficult fixtures without one of their key midfielders.

The FA’s ruling serves as a reminder of strict disciplinary standards in the Premier League, emphasizing that actions directed at fans, regardless of provocation, are unacceptable.
