Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy was reportedly detained briefly by customs officials at a Moroccan airport over concerns relating to the jewellery he was carrying.
The incident occurred while the artiste was travelling to Rabat for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Fan Zone concert. The development was confirmed by the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, during a press briefing.
According to Motsepe, Burna Boy was stopped after customs officials noticed the large quantity of gold jewellery in his possession. The matter reportedly required intervention at a senior level before it was amicably resolved.
Following the resolution, the singer proceeded to headline the AFCON Fan Zone concert in Rabat on January 16, performing alongside Ghanaian musician Stonebwoy and Moroccan artistes Stormy and Jaylann.
The revelation quickly sparked reactions on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter). While some users questioned why the singer was travelling with expensive jewellery, others defended him, arguing that displaying luxury items is common among global music stars.
Despite the online debate, Burna Boy faced no legal consequences and successfully fulfilled his performance obligations at the AFCON event.
