Calum McFarlane Ready for Chelsea Interim Role After “Whirlwind” 24 Hours

Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane has described the past 24 hours as a “whirlwind” following his unexpected appointment as temporary replacement for Enzo Maresca. McFarlane, who was previously in charge of Chelsea’s U21s, will lead the senior side for the first time in Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

A Sudden Promotion

Maresca parted company with Chelsea on Thursday, just 18 months after succeeding Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge. The Italian’s exit followed a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, leaving Chelsea 15 points behind league leaders Arsenal.

McFarlane’s promotion was so sudden that his training ground pass had to be amended to grant him access to the press conference room on Friday morning.

“It’s been a crazy 24 hours, a whirlwind, as you can imagine, but also really enjoyable and really exciting,” said McFarlane.
“I can only feel positive about it. It’s an amazing experience.”

Preparing for Pep Guardiola

McFarlane’s managerial debut will be against Pep Guardiola, who recently celebrated 1,000 matches as a head coach. The challenge is immense, but the English coach remains calm and focused:

“I am quite relaxed. I am sure as we get closer to the game it will become more nerve-wracking. I haven’t worked at this level before, but the lads have been brilliant and we will do this together.”

Chelsea travel to Manchester sitting three places and 11 points behind second-placed City, making a strong performance critical. McFarlane emphasized the importance of supporting the players and giving a full account of themselves:

“The team needs to be ready and prepared, and our role is giving the players the support they need to go and execute. I wouldn’t say we have nothing to lose. We have to give a real good account of ourselves.”

Maresca’s Departure and Guardiola’s Comments

Following Maresca’s exit, speculation emerged that he had held discussions with Manchester City about succeeding Guardiola, though the former Leicester City boss denied these claims. Guardiola expressed respect for Maresca’s tenure at Chelsea:

“From my point of view Chelsea have lost an incredible manager and an incredible person. It’s a decision from the Chelsea hierarchy, so I’ve nothing to say. How lucky I am in the club where I am. My club is extraordinary.”

Guardiola, under contract until the end of the 2026-27 season, reaffirmed his commitment to City:

“I have one more year. I’ve been here for 10 years and I promise you I will leave one day, but I have a contract, I’m happy, I want to fight with my team, the hierarchy respect me—they proved last season when we didn’t win one game in three months.”

Looking Ahead for Chelsea

Calum McFarlane now faces the daunting task of leading Chelsea in the Premier League against one of Europe’s strongest sides. While it is his first senior managerial role, his knowledge of the squad and familiarity with young talents could provide Chelsea with a tactical edge.

The coming weeks will also shape discussions about Chelsea’s long-term managerial plans, but for now, McFarlane has the opportunity to make an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge. His debut against Manchester City will be closely watched by fans, pundits, and the wider Premier League community.
