Carlos Alcaraz Battles Past Taylor Fritz in Three-Set Thriller to Close in on Year-End World No. 1 Ranking

Alcaraz Overcomes Fritz in Epic ATP Finals Showdown

Carlos Alcaraz produced another display of grit and brilliance to defeat Taylor Fritz 6-7(2-7), 7-5, 6-3 in a captivating encounter at the ATP Finals 2025 in Turin, moving to within one win of reclaiming the year-end world No. 1 ranking.

The 22-year-old Spaniard, seeded top for the tournament, had to dig deep against the powerful American in a two-hour and 48-minute thriller that showcased both players at their very best.

The result leaves Alcaraz on the brink of both the ATP Finals semi-finals and the top spot in the ATP world rankings. Victory in his final group match against Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday would seal both achievements.

Alcaraz Resilient as Fritz Pushes Him to the Limit

The clash between Alcaraz and Fritz lived up to its billing as one of the highlights of the Turin group stage. Fritz, last year’s runner-up at the ATP Finals, came out firing with his trademark heavy forehand and pinpoint serving, pushing the Spaniard to the edge throughout the opening set.

A marathon first four games lasting half an hour set the tone for a fiercely competitive match. Both players traded early breaks before Fritz held his nerve to dominate the tie-break, taking the first set 7-6 (7-2).

Alcaraz, however, showed the resilience and tactical maturity that have defined his meteoric rise. In a gripping second set that featured an extraordinary 14-minute fifth game, the Spaniard saved multiple break points and roared to the crowd as he held serve.

The turning point came late in the second set when Fritz, who had been nearly flawless on serve, double-faulted at 5-6 to hand Alcaraz a crucial break and the set.

From there, the world No. 2 took control, breaking early in the third and closing out the match with trademark flair — including a stunning overhead backhand drop shot that brought the Turin crowd to its feet.

“It was tight. I felt I was struggling more than him,” said Alcaraz after the win. “I was really relieved because of everything I went through physically. I’m happy I found a way to come back and find his weaknesses.”

Musetti Stuns De Minaur to Keep Group Alive

In the day’s other match, Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti electrified the home crowd with a remarkable 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 win over Alex de Minaur.

Backed by passionate local support, the 23-year-old rallied from 3-5 down in the deciding set to seal victory in just under three hours.

“With a big heart and big passion — I don’t know from where — I started to play better,” said Musetti. “The support of the crowd was amazing. I have to thank them all.”

The result means Alcaraz’s qualification for the semi-finals — and his quest for the year-end No. 1 title — will go down to his final group-stage match against Musetti.

Year-End World No. 1 Battle: Alcaraz vs Sinner

With one round remaining, Jannik Sinner remains Alcaraz’s only rival for the year-end world No. 1 ranking. The defending ATP Finals champion must retain his title and hope Alcaraz fails to reach the final to overtake him.

If Alcaraz defeats Musetti, however, he will secure the year-end top ranking regardless of Sinner’s results — capping another phenomenal season that includes eight ATP titles and a Tour-leading 69 wins.

When asked whether the pressure of the No. 1 ranking affected him during the match, Alcaraz admitted it was difficult to ignore.

“It’s really difficult not to think about the number one spot,” he said. “At the beginning of the match, I thought a little bit about it. But during the match, there were a lot of things to think about — the number one thoughts disappeared.”

A Season of Dominance and Resilience

Alcaraz’s latest triumph adds another chapter to an extraordinary 2025 season. The Spaniard has combined explosive athleticism with mental toughness, rebounding from setbacks at Wimbledon and the US Open to dominate the indoor swing.

His win over Fritz was his 69th victory of the year, further solidifying his reputation as one of the most complete players on the ATP Tour.

The match also underlined Fritz’s resurgence. Despite the defeat, the American delivered a strong performance, landing 75% of his first serves and matching Alcaraz blow for blow in extended rallies.

The two players left the court to a standing ovation from the Turin crowd, who witnessed one of the tournament’s most enthralling encounters so far.

What’s Next for Alcaraz

Alcaraz will now turn his focus to Thursday’s decisive group match against Lorenzo Musetti. A win would guarantee:

  • A place in the ATP Finals semi-finals, and
  • The year-end World No. 1 ranking, the second of his career.

Failure to advance would open the door for Jannik Sinner, who must defend his ATP Finals crown to keep his own hopes alive.

Whatever the outcome, the stage is set for another thrilling chapter in the ongoing rivalry between the two young stars leading the next generation of men’s tennis.
